“Religion has come to be widely regarded as irrational, reactionary, and controversial—a baleful, divisive force in society that generates hate and conflict and is best quarantined from public life.… There is quite simply no greater sea-change from the world of the American framers to the world of contemporary American intellectuals than the attitude toward faith and its importance to freedom.”1 —Os Guinness

Chapter nine

The Separation of God and America

Restoring the Wall of Virtue That Protects Freedom

Once, two neighboring kingdoms lived in a constant state of war. One kingdom was in a beautiful, fertile valley. The other overlooked the valley kingdom from a high mountain plateau. Each kingdom regularly attacked the other, always fearing its enemy would attack first. The wars went on for generations.

One day, as the valley kingdom prepared for an attack from the mountain kingdom, it was attacked from its unguarded side by a new enemy from the south. The surprise attack caught the valley soldiers off guard, and they were in danger of total defeat.

The truce lasted throughout the lives of both kings. The mountain kingdom kept guards posted on an overlook to make sure the rock wall stayed in place. After both kings died, new kings took the thrones in their kingdoms. The new valley king did not know why the rock wall had been built, but the new king and the people of the mountain kingdom had not forgotten. They continued to post guards every day to make sure the promise of peace was kept.

Not knowing of its importance, the new valley king ordered the rock wall to be taken down to allow for the expansion of his kingdom. The guards for the mountain kingdom watched from above as all the rocks were removed from the wall below. The day
